NRA Basic Personal Protection Outside the Home

Course Goal: To develop in the students the basic knowledge, skills and attitude essential for avoiding dangerous confrontations and for the safe, effective, responsible, and ethical use of a concealed pistol for self-defense outside the home.

Completing this course will qualify students to obtain an Alaska Concealed Handgun Permit from the Alaska Department of Public Safety.

This is an 9 hour course for the Basic Course (Level 1) and 5 additional hours for the advanced course (Level 2) for a total of 14 hours if both certificates are awarded.

  • Participants must posses the basic defensive skills presented in NRA Basics of Personal Protection in the Home Course. Prospective participants can demonstrate that they have the requisite knowledge, skills, and attitudes by producing an NRA Basic Personal Protection in the Home Certificate or by passing the Pre-Course Assessment.
  • Students must be adult citizens.
  • Students must use their own pistols or revolvers.
  • Students must also use their own strong side hip holsters or holster purses. (Holster purses may be available for students to try with sufficient notice to instructor.)
  • Students must provide their own ammunition.
  • Students should bring extra magazines for pistols and speed loaders for revolvers as well as pouches for same.
